INTIMACY: NEW QUEER ART FROM BERLIN AND BEYOUND

Intimacy is one of the central topics in queer art. Here, the relationship between the public and the private is expressed in a distinctive way. Even though it can be risky for queer minorities to make their intimate relations public, new forms and versions of intimacy have constantly evolved, especially in Berlin – with people finding ecstasy on the dancefloor, adventure in the darkroom, or tenderness in their polyamorous relationships.

I love Berlin´s `No pictures on the dance floor´ philosophy.

The freedom that comes with the safety of knowing that, what happens in the club will stay there. When they put a sticker on your phone camera it also encourages you to be in the moment for as long as this present might last. To stop the endless scrolling of our image saturated digital world and click with our own fleshy kind.

But we are walking contradictions. To surprise yourself by breaking your own principles is very human, I believe...

The Stonewall uprisings of June 28, 1969, in New York, led to the beginning of LGBTQ+ activism, and years later, this date became World Gay Pride Day.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the riots, and in order to make visible and celebrate the achievements so far accomplished by the LGBTQ+ community, this collective exhibition aims to be a reminder of our duty to resist and keep fighting.

UNCENSORED

GROUP EXHIBITION
07.12.2018 - 10.12.2018
BLOGFABRIK BERLIN

In the Zeitgeist of sexual diversity, the restrictive code of social media for images of the human body is an unnecessary constraint for artists and creatives. Countless creators are regularly censored and blocked - even deleted - by the networks for their work. The group exhibition #UNCENSOREDBERLIN deals with those images that are affected by this form of censorship and offers the participating artists a platform to express themselves freely.

SOLOS, DIPTYCHS, TRIPTYCHS, FOURSOMES AND TRIPS

“We were born from original sin. Adam bit the apple and that’s why my grandmother used to go to church every Sunday to worship bleeding Christs and weeping Virgin Maries, to ask for forgiveness. She would bring home churros con chocolate and obituaries and indulge in the S&M aesthetics of the Catholic Church. That’s what brought her to heaven. At least I hope, for that was her plan.

Being a faggot, I don’ carry any cross but my closet. It’s invisible to others, but transparent to me. And I wouldn’t say it’s a baggage, because it’s empty: a void, hungry for acceptance.

Everybody has one. Everybody deals with it the best they can.”  - Victor Luque.

In Victor’s solo exhibition “Open end“, he juxtaposes a range of images which at first appear to be unconnected, but reveal at close inspection a surprising complementarity. They confront viewers in their off-beat arrangement, but also allow them to make their own interpretations.

YOU (SOMETHING IN BETWEEN) ME

“It sounds very vanilla, but I have a fetish for water.

I was around 9 and my swimming coach made me realize what I wanted. Nothing really happened, just in my head; he and I, both wet. Earth's water has been here since forever. I just read an article about how probable it is, that we are drinking some dinosaur piss in each glass of water. This makes me wonder how much of the water in that pool was carrying already something of me and it was touching him. H2O filling the gap and merging flesh.”  - Victor Luque.

FROM PLEASURE TO HAPPINESS

THERE IS NOTHING MORE PROMISCUOUS THAN PLANTS.

I was walking through a maze, it was very steamy at times. Fragrant, yet smelly; even sexy somehow, but in a very innocent and subtle way. Then I started to decode their green language and I saw it clearly: obscene shapes and postures,

Sex was everywhere: Shameless flowers looking for attention, engaging in a very exhibitionistic way with no filter at all. Anything goes. Most plants are bisexual and hermaphrodite. Their main goal in life is to spread the seed - the same for most living organisms - aren’t we all trapped, in some way, by this biological fate?

All of a sudden my visit to the botanical garden was like wandering in a sex club.

Over the years, I’ve become more interested in watching than in pollenating and nothing arouses me more than being in front of a scene and to capture a trace of reality with my camera.

Sometimes I think I tend to sexualize everything, but at the end of the day, isn’t sex the bottom line of it all? ;)
